Spray Foam Insulation R-Value Guide

Understanding R-values is essential for proper insulation specification. R-value measures thermal resistanceβ€”higher R-values provide better insulation performance. Here's how spray foam compares across different applications and thicknesses.

Application Product Type Thickness R-Value
Attic Insulation Open-Cell Spray Foam 5.5 inches R-20
Attic Insulation Closed-Cell Spray Foam 3 inches R-20
Basement Walls Closed-Cell Spray Foam 2 inches R-13
Basement Walls Closed-Cell Spray Foam 3 inches R-20
Exterior Walls Closed-Cell Spray Foam 2 inches R-13
Exterior Walls Open-Cell Spray Foam 3.5 inches R-13
Crawl Space Closed-Cell Spray Foam 2 inches R-13
Rim Joists Closed-Cell Spray Foam 3 inches R-20
Commercial Roofs Closed-Cell Spray Foam 4 inches R-28
Cathedral Ceilings Open-Cell Spray Foam 7 inches R-25

Note: Open-cell spray foam provides approximately R-3.6 to R-3.8 per inch. Closed-cell spray foam provides approximately R-6 to R-7 per inch. Actual R-values may vary based on product formulation, installation conditions, and temperature. Always consult with certified installers for proper specification based on your specific project requirements and local building codes.
